School Language Policy & Programs

Henry Hudson School Language Policy
Our goal at School 28 is to develop a school community that values the cultural and linguistic diversity of our families and strives to support multilingualism in our students. The home language is an important part of the learning process. In our school, home languages will be visible and audible in the language ecology of the school and valued as an important part of the child and learning process.
In order to attain this goal, all teachers will incorporate translanguaging strategies and elements of SIOP into instruction. This allows emergent bilingual students to access grade level content while also practicing home language skills.
- Translanguaging is the purposeful use of English and the home language(s) to support student learning. https://www.cuny-nysieb.org/translanguaging-resources/translanguaging-guides/
- SIOP is an instructional model that incorporates specific strategies to support student access to content learning in English. cal.org/siop/about
